Speech and Debate

Welcome to the E.V.H.S. U.I.L. Speech and Debate Home Page!

Debate

What is UIL Debate? Students develop skills in research, critical thinking, organization, persuasion and communication, and see tangible benefits from participation while in school such as confidence in speaking situations, spontaneity in interviews, improved writing in other courses, and gaining diverse perspectives.

If any or all of that sounds good to you, then you are a great candidate for Debate, UIL's longest running contest!

The Lincoln-Douglas Debate:

September - December topic to debate: Wealth inequality in the United States is detrimental to democracy.

Cross-Examination Debate:

two-member teams debate a policy question

Speech

The UIL Speech team competes in two contests.

Oral Interpretation: Contestants choose pieces of prose, poetry or drama to recite, putting their own unique voice to the works ~

*search for literature through extensive reading

*analyze to comprehend the true essence of the literature

*find an affinity with gifted authors, feeling the words of the writers

*prepare for the performance moment

"Oral interpretation is an art, not simply a contest."

Extemporaneous Speaking: You have to be an informed reader and will prepare a speech responding to a prompt, using your files of notes you've collected throughout the semester about current events.

If that sounds like fun to you, then please join the UIL Speech team!
