What is AVID?
AVID is a 4-year system dedicated to helping students achieve their goal of going to college. Students in AVID are motivated students who may require additional academic support in an advanced course and want to attend a 4-year university. AVID is an elective class that is part of the regular school day and provides academic monitoring, tutoring, and support for all 4 years of high school.
What students learn in AVID?
AVID students learn skills that will help them be successful in high school and in college. We work to improve reading and writing, which are essential skills for success in high school, college, and beyond. Additional skills students will learn include focused note-taking, organization, time management, collaboration, and inquiry.
AVID and the College Application Process?
AVID will not only prepare students for college-level work, but will also support them as they navigate the college application process. In the AVID elective, students will have the opportunity to research colleges and careers, prepare for college entrance exams (such as the SAT ), complete college applications, scholarship and financial aid applications. The AVID elective walks students through the process and answers any questions that arise.
Benefits of being in AVID?
There are several additional benefits to joining the AVID system through the elective course. Students have the opportunity to work with tutors during in-class tutorials to get additional help with their classes. In addition, we tour a variety of college campuses to give students a better idea of what college is really like, what different options are available, and college and career guest speakers that speak on a variety of topics. Also, students have a dedicated AVID teacher to guide and support them through the course selection and college process.
