Student Code of Conduct

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

Swim team is as an extension of the classroom. It is important to set and maintain high standards of sportsmanship, ethics and integrity on our team. Our mission is to provide direction and constant vigilance under which good sportsmanship can prosper and have a lasting effect on our young athletes. We feel the need to stress the type of exemplary behavior that should be exhibited by all players and spectators. Sportsmanship is character displayed through athletic competition.

Swimmers are expected to have:

> Integrity - live up to high ideals of ethics and sportsmanship; do what’s right.

> Honesty - do not lie, cheat, steal or engage in any other dishonest or unsportsmanlike conduct.

> Reliability - fulfill commitments; do what you say you will do; be on time.

> Respect - treat people with respect all the time.

> Class – live and cheer with class; be gracious in victory and accept defeat with dignity; compliment extraordinary performance; and show respect for all competitors.

> Self-Control – exercise self-control; do not fight or show excessive displays of anger or frustration; do not to demean others.

Penalties for Inappropriate Athlete Conduct:

1. Physical Conditioning

2. Parent Meeting

3. Athlete Contract

4. Meet Suspension

5. Dismissal from team

Conflicts with Policy or Personnel:

This section is included for conflict resolution purposes between athlete and coach or parent and coach. Any conflict with swimming policy or coaches should be handled in accordance to the following protocol:

1. Meet with Coach Pukys and Coach LaRaia directly at a mutually appointed time (never at or after a meet or practice).

2. Meet with EVHS or GHS Athletic Coordinator and Coach Pukys and Coach LaRaia at a mutually appointed time.

Constant reprimands, violations of school policy, and discipline referrals will result in suspension and/or expulsion from the team.

Please see GISD Athletic handbook for complete district rules and information.

Swim Eligibility

Swimmers fall under the district eligibility to participate policy. A student who recorded a nine week grade average in any course is lower than 70 at the end of a nine week period shall be suspended from competition during the succeeding three week period.  If the student is passing all classes at the three week mark, the student may regain eligibility. Please refer to district policy for full information.

Quitting or Dropping Swim Team

There will be times when some athletes find it necessary to quit swimming before, during, or after the season. Whatever the reason, an athlete must follow the steps listed below:

1. The athlete should think the whole situation through before reaching a final decision.

2. The athlete should talk to the coach to see if a solution can be reached without having to quit. A conference between the parents, athlete, and coach, or any combination thereof, may be required, and is highly recommended before an athlete will be permitted to quit.

3.  If an athlete decides to quit, he/she must check out of the sport just as he/she would check out of any academic class.

4. All equipment must be turned in clean. The athlete must pay for any equipment not returned to the coach of the sport he/she is leaving in order to join the other sport. If the coach does not give permission, the athlete must wait until the first sport has completed its season before joining the new sport. While the athlete waits, he/she will be placed in a regular physical education class.

Awards and Lettering

The school letter is among the highest awards the school bestows; the highest, of course, is the diploma. In order to letter, you must be on a varsity team and satisfy the requirements of the head coach. A participant may letter at the coach’s discretion if the participant is considered to have been of exceptional value to the team.

In order to letter, an athlete must:

> maintain a 95% practice attendance

> swim in all scheduled meets

> must positively contribute to the team

> must score points in two or more competitions, either as an individual, or as part of relay team

> must compete in the district meet

Letters can be forfeited for the following reasons: dismissal from team, quitting the team, or grade ineligibility.

NOTE: Any student who has qualified for a letter but has been dismissed from the team for disciplinary reasons will not receive an award.
